Last week, three-piece rock outfit lespecial performed a special tribute set to Oysterhead at Worcester, MA’s Palladium. lespecial’s Luke Bemand, Jonathan Grusauskas, and Rory Dolan delivered an exceptionally spot-on performance, which should give Oysterhead’s Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool, and Stewart Copeland even more of a reason to reconsider rekindling their flame. The Northeast-based band worked through material off of Oysterhead’s lone studio album, 2001’s The Grand Pecking Order, as well as choice covers of Primus and The Police.
Following a brief tease-turned fake-out of Phish’s “Chalk Dust Torture”, lespecial opened up their set with takes on Oysterhead’s “Little Faces”, “Rubberneck Lions”, “Shadow Of A Man”, and “Army’s On Ecstacy”. Next, the trio worked through the Primus offshoot Sausage’s “Riddles Are Abound Tonight”, which featured a quote from Primus’ “American Life”, before hopping back into “Army’s On Ecstacy”.
lespecial moved forward with covers of The Police’s “Behind My Camel” and Primus’ “Groundhog’s Day”, before moving back into Oysterhead material with “Birthday Boys” and “The Grand Pecking Order”. lespecial kept on truckin’ with an incomplete rendition of The Police’s “Every Breath You Take”, which featured a tease of Phish’s “Fee”, as well as Pink Talking Fish’s Zack Burwick joining on percussion. Burwick stayed on stage to helped the band close of their set with “Mr. Oysterhead”, which contained an appropriate set-ending tease of “Chalk Dust Torture”.
