Mike Gordon Guests With Robert Walter’s 20th Congress & Barika In Burlington

Three members of Mike Gordon‘s five-piece were on the bill at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vermont last night, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the Phish bassist turned up at the show. Gordon wound up sitting in with both Barika and Robert Walter’s 20th Congress.

Barika, led by percussionist Craig Myers of Mike’s band kicked off the festivities on a cold night in Burlington. The six-piece, which includes Dopapod‘s Rob Compa on guitar welcomed a number of guests to share the stage. Vocalist Daby Toure was the first of the guests to help out. Gordon, drummer John Kimock and keyboardist Robert Walter added to “Angatta,” a song all three have played a number of times with Myers at Mike Gordon shows dating back to 2014. Watch Barika’s set:

The Robert Walter’s 20th Congress lineup for Wednesday’s show found the keyboardist joined by guitarist Scott Metzger, John Kimock on drums and Marc Friedman on bass. Last year, RW20thC issued Spacesuit and their set at Higher Ground featured seven of the 10 tracks on the LP. The quartet opened the performance with “Hunk” from 2013’s Get Thy Bearings and the band also dug into the title track from the album a few songs later. Gordon emerged after “Get Thy Bearings” to take over for Friedman on “Don’t Chin The Dog.” Yet another tune from Get Thy Bearings, “Don’t Chin The Dog” has been played by Gordon’s quintet over a dozen times in the past three years. Mike left the band to focus on Spacesuit tracks such as “13th Key” “Posthuman” and “Chalk Giant.”

Walter and his group followed a sequence of four Spacesuit tunes with “Kickin’ Up Dust” from Robert’s 2005 solo album Super Heavy Organ. After returning to Spacesuit for “Current Futures,” the four-piece performed the Super Heavy Organ favorite “Don’t Hate, Congratulate.” The band went on to close out the set with NOLA gem “Who Took the Happiness Out” and the pairing of “What I Say” and Miles Davis’ “Honky Tonk.” Robert looked to his Greyboy Allstars days for the encore of “Quantico VA.”
