Paul McCartney Shares Initial Artwork From Forthcoming Children’s Book, “Hey Grandude!”

201

Paul McCartney has half a century’s worth of experience when it comes to the process of picking out the artwork featured on and inside his albums. Deciding on visual styles for content aimed at young children, their parents, and librarians, however—well that’s new territory for McCartney altogether. Yet, he’s managed to successfully work alongside illustrator and former Pixar Animation Studios intern Kathryn Durst on the art design to his forthcoming debut children’s book, Hey Grandude!, which is scheduled to arrive on September 5th via Puffin Books. McCartney took to his website and social media pages on Thursday to share the cover art and various character illustration designs for the book, which features a dapper-looking Paul with that trademark Hofner electric bass of his.

While the new images shared on Thursday seem to indicate that McCartney will have some sort of role in the story’s narrative, the titular magic granddad—or “Grandude,” as the title hilariously references—will be a fictional character. In the new images, Grandude is seen surrounded by some gleefully onlooking grandchildren, who are called “Chillers” in the story. Kathryn Durst also designed her own animated character, who can be seen doodling away in her own artwork below.

“I’m excited to share the cover of my new children’s book ‘Hey Grandude!’ which will be out later this year,” McCartney said in a statement to go with the arrival of book’s artwork on Thursday. “I’ve worked on this with a great illustrator called Kathryn Durst and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.”

Durst also added to the excitement by stating, “I am thrilled to be able to share the cover of ‘Hey Grandude!’ It features the main character of the story – Grandude, and his four adorable grandchildren that he calls ‘chillers’ … I had so much fun working on the illustrations for the book, and I hope others will have just as much fun reading it!”

Fans and Beatles-loving parents can click here to pre-order the 32-page children’s book before it arrives on September 5th.
