Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California hosted a Winter Hootenanny concert featuring Phil Lesh joined by a bevy of Bay Area musicians on Thursday night. Professionally-shot video of the entire show is available and can be viewed below.
Phil was joined by guitarists Stu Allen, Grahame Lesh and Cass McCombs as well as keyboardist Scott Guberman and drummer Nathan Graham for the slow-paced “Bertha” opener last night. Next, guitarists Ross James and Alex Koford, Phil, Graham, Nathan and Scott worked Chuck Berry’s “Thirty Days (To Get Back Home)” into “Cumberland Blues.” Then, a lineup of Phil, Grahame, Scott, Nathan, Greg Loiacono and Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) treated the capacity crowd to Bob Dylan/Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel.” The same group of musicians performed Gene Clark’s “Train Leaves Here This Morning.” Stu came back out for “New Potato Caboose” and left the stage for the Koford-sung “They Love Each Other” that followed. Loiacono led “Standin’” by Townes Van Zandt to close out the frame.
The second set got underway with Guberman, Loiacono, James, Phil Lesh, Nathan Graham and Koford pairing up for “Tennessee Jed.” Stu Allen went on to replace Greg Loiacono for a rendition of “Wharf Rat” featuring Alex on lead vocals. Allen had a turn in the spotlight on “Next Time You See Me.” Next up was a “The Race Is On” that included contributions from Lebo, Phil, Stu, Scott, Nathan and Ross. A big change to the lineup was in store for “Brown-Eyed Women” as McCombs returned to the stage and guitarist Mike Pascale made his first appearance of the evening. The improvisational high point of the night came with an adventurous “The Other One” performed by Phil, Scott, Stu, Mike, Nathan and Cass. Pascale led the group through Waylon Jennings’ “Clyde” as both an intro and outro to “The Other One.”
Cass McCombs stuck around after “The Other One” sequence to sing “Crazy Fingers” while backed by Phil, Grahame, Lebo, Scott and Nathan. Lebo then stepped into the spotlight to lead an emotionally-charged rendition of “Helpless” by Neil Young. The second set came to a close with a powerful cover of The Beatles’ “Revolution.” Fittingly, Phil led one of his signature tunes — “Box Of Rain” — as the evening’s finale.
