At Sunday evening’s Golden Globes, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody won a number of the night’s most prestigious honors.
Bohemian Rhapsody nabbed the night’s biggest award, “Best Motion Picture – Drama,” beating out A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, and If Beale Sreet Could Talk for the distinction.

Lead actor Rami Malek, who tackled the role of Queen’s singular frontman, Freddie Mercury, also took home the award for “Best Actor in a Motion Picture,” beating out Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased), and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman).

Bohemian Rhapsody‘s big night at the Golden Globes comes in the wake of their history-making success at the box office in late 2018. The premiered to a more-than-$50M opening weekend on November 2nd, and has since gone on to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. Not everybody has been completely thrilled by the film, which has caught considerable flak for its perceived misrepresentations of the band’s historical timeline and, particularly, for its handling of Mercury’s sexuality and sexual awakening. However, despite its factual shortcomings, Bohemian Rhaposdy has continued to impress audiences, critics and, apparently, awards voters on the merit of its high entertainment value.
The other notable live music-centric film in the running for awards this year, A Star Is Born, did not go home empty-handed despite Bohemian Rhapsody‘s dominance, as its de facto theme song, “Shallow”, performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, got the nod for “Best Original Song – Motion Picture.”
