STS9 Covers Radiohead In San Francisco

Over the weekend, STS9 continued their winter tour with a two-night run at San Francisco’s The Warfield. During the weekend-opening performance on Friday, January 25, the jamtronica favorites pulled out all the stops, debuting the band’s cover of “All I Need” by Radiohead and reviving “Tooth” for the first time in over two years.

STS9 opened up the show with their remix of The Bloody Beetroots’ “Awesome” featuring The Cool Kids. With a focus on segues, the group deftly moved into “When The Dust Settles Reprise.” Off their similarly named 2011 EP, the band used the song to sandwich “Tooth,” marking a major highlight of the first set. “Tooth” has been absent from the band’s setlists for over two years; its last performance was during STS9’s New Year’s Eve run at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium on December 29, 2016. For this return performance, the group again highlighted their transitionary skills, mashing up “Tooth” within “When The Dust Settles Reprise” before moving into “Rise Above, Get Loud.”

From there, the band performed the old-school favorite “Kaya” before landing in the first frame’s non-stop closing combination. Starting with “Out Of This World,” the band worked into “Poseidon,” using this latter track as the inspiration for a mash-up with “Poseidon” before settling into the song in full. To close out set one, STS9 performed the final two numbers from their “Frequencies” suite.

Returning for the second frame, STS9 opened with “Oil & Water” off their seventh album, Ad Explorata, which was used to sandwich the group’s debut cover of Radiohead’s “All I Need.” Though “All I Need” marked the first time the band as a whole has performed a track from Radiohead, the song has been previously performed by keyboardist David Phipps during solo performances. With this exceptional debut behind them, the group followed up with a non-stop run through “Be Nice,” “Crystal Instrument,” “Dragon City” and “Metameme.” To close the show in full, STS9 offered up a one-two hit of “Seed” into “Four Year Puma” before the band’s encore of “Breathe In.”
