The Avett Brothers Debut Grateful Dead Cover & More On New Year’s Eve

167

The Avett Brothers debuted a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Truckin’” after counting down the final seconds of 2018. The band’s New Year’s Eve concert at Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina also featured the live debut of a new original, “Who Will I Hold When You’re Gone,” as well as their first live performance of their collaboration with Asleep At The Wheel, “Willie Got There First.”

The “Who Will I Hold” debut came early in the main set and was performed by just guitarist Seth Avett, banjoist Scott Avett and bassist Bob Crawford. It was followed by “Satan Pulls The Strings” and “Willie Got There First,” the latter of which was included on Asleep At The Wheel’s 2018 album New Routes featuring Seth and Scott.

The band left the stage mid-set and Bonnie Avett and Jim Avett emerged for a parental version of “In The Garden.” The Avetts/Crawford trio then appeared at one of the venue’s concession stands for performances of “Distraction #74” and “I Would Be Sad.” The main set also saw a performance of the recently issued single, “Trouble Letting Go.”

Valient Himself from local metal act Valient Thorr reprised playing the role of Father Time leading up to the New Year’s Eve countdown. After The Avetts performed “Auld Lang Syne” at midnight, Thorr remained on stage for the debut of “Truckin’” and the subsequent cover of Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man’s Blues.” Watch audience-shot video from Charlotte via DCRANGERSFAN below:
