Beck was at CBS Studios on Monday to perform his recently-shared cover of “Tarantula”, which was inspired by the Oscar-nominated film, Roma. The popular alternative rocker had initially recorded his cinematic cover of Colourbox’s new-wave single alongside Leslie Feist and Alex Lilly for the forthcoming compilation album, Music Inspired By The Film Roma, although it’s worth noting that the song actually has no affiliation with the hit movie. The compilation album is scheduled to arrive this Friday, February 8th, so Beck’s performance on Monday came just in time to give fans a live look into their reimagined version of the 1983 single.
Beck, Feist, and Lilly were joined for the televised performance by Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes), Inara George (The Bird And The Bee), and The LA Philharmonic, which was conducted by the orchestra’s music director, Gustavo Dudamel. Interestingly enough, the film’s director, Alfonso Cuarón, was also on set to help introduce the night’s musical guests.
The performance opens up with the orchestra taking the listener right into the world of the song via the warmth of their string section, before Beck steps to the mic to start on the lyrics. With all the pop-based artists who typically come on as late-night show musical guests, it is refreshing to see and hear a performance based around orchestra-based instrumentation and relaxing group vocals. Beck was back in the music headlines recently as he’s one of the notable musicians who will appear on Jenny Lewis‘ forthcoming studio album, On The Line. Beck also recently collaborated with hard rock band Cage The Elephant on one of their own new singles, “Night Running”, which will be released soon.
