Dead & Company Performs ‘The Other One’ In Austin: Pro-Shot Video

In 2017, Dead & Company‘s fall tour was cut short after guitarist John Mayer underwent an emergency appendectomy. Instead of continuing on to New Orleans as planned, the band unexpectedly finished their year with a two-night run in Texas on December 1 and 2.

For their second night in the Lone Star State and their final performance of 2017, the band featuring Grateful Dead members bob-weir, mickey-hart and Bill Kreutzmann found themselves in Austin, Texas, at the Frank Erwin Center. The group used their first set to pay tribute to their hosting state, cheekily working in references to Texas through the lyrics of songs like “Jack Straw” and “New Minglewood Blues.” For the second set, the band focused on stretching songs out, which was evidenced by the 25-minute combination of “Dark Star” into “The Other One.”

Dead & Company released pro-shot video of “The Other One” in Austin on December 2, which was filmed and edited by Ross Harris and produced by Derek Featherstone. The band partnered the video with comments from Grateful Dead essayist and Tales From The Golden Road radio host Gary Lambert. He offered these thoughts:

No one could have asked for or planned a better capstone to a great musical year, as the band delivered a performance that more than a few informed listeners have called the best of the Fall tour, the best of 2017, or perhaps even the single best show Dead & Company had yet played, period. The audio evidence makes a compelling case for any and all of those claims.
