155

Greensky Bluegrass brought their Winter Tour to a close on Saturday finishing out a two-night stand at The Fillmore Detroit. The jamgrass act who originates from two hours west of the Motor City offered up one long three-hour set that included Billy Strings and his bandmates rotating in and out for a stretch.

The five-piece act kicked things off with “Jaywalking” from their 2011 LP Handguns. Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues” and the pairing of setlist staples “The Four” and “Take Cover” followed. Greensky would highlight a handful of tracks from their new studio album All For Money during the opening portion of the night with takes on “Do It Alone,” “Ashes” and “Murder Of Crows.”

Strings and his bandmates, as well as the members of Greensky Bluegrass, would trickle on and off the stage throughout the next eight songs. Strings and Billy Failing were up first teaming with the rest of Greensky on The Stanley Brothers’ “Little Maggie.” The combination of Paul Hoffman, Mike Devol, Anders Beck along with Strings and Failing then offered up The Miracles’ “Second That Emotion,” which was played for just the second time since 2017. As the ad-hoc collective transitioned out of the Motown classic as the stage was turned Strings and the members of his band with by Beck and Hoffman sticking around. The six musicians leaned on “Meet Me At The Creek” from Strings 2017 album Turmoil & Tinfoil. Hoffman and Strings then performed as a duo on a pair of “Waiting” songs from their respective catalogs with “While Waiting” and “While I’m Waiting Here.”

The interactive mix and match stretch continued with Strings leading a group of Michael Bont, Jarrod Walker, Royal Massat and Dave Bruzza on one more from his songbook with “Dust In A Baggie.” A take on “Steam Powered Aeroplane” featured Walker from Billy’s band with Bont, Bruzza and Devol. The lineup rotations finally came to a close with “Demons” as all of Greensky teamed with Walker.

The final stretch of the night was highlighted by “Windshield” > “Living Over” as well as the set-closing pairing of “Broke Mountain Breakdown” and “What You Need.” Greensky Bluegrass brought their marathon night to end by looking to the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River” as their lone encore.
