Greensky Bluegrass Plays Setlist Word Games On “Casual Wednesday” With Billy Strings & More [Full Audio]

99

Greensky Bluegrass was back in action on Wednesday night with a performance at Express Live! in Columbus, OH as the last week of shows continued as part of their 2019 winter tour. The jam-grass outfit was joined once again in support by Billy Strings, who would come out to play with the Greensky fellas during their headlining set later on in the show. Of course, being that it was Wednesday night, the band also marked their mid-week party by reviving  “Casual Wednesday” for the first time on their 2019 tour, making for an evening of music which also included special guests and notable covers.

The first set of Greensky’s headlining performance on Wednesday began with a live rendition of “Reverend” followed by a cover of Flatt & Scruggs‘ “Cryin’ Holy Unto The Lord (Rock Where Moses Stood)”. Next came “Ashes”, a relaxed tune from their 2018 All for Money LP. The band then picked the energy back up with performances of “Leap Year”, “Who Is Frederico?”, “Room Without a Roof”, and “Depot Bay”. For the next song, “Hot Dogs (On Parade)”, the majority of the band left the stage while Dave Bruzza and Billy Strings gave fans their own duet interpretation of the Greensky original. Strings remained on stage as the rest of the band returned to send the audience into the set break with a performance of “Freeborn Man”.

The second set began with “Casual Wednesday” featuring some assistance from Miles Weissman, the son of Greensky publicist, Dave Weissman. “Casual Wednesday”, for those who may not know, is used by the band as a vehicle for mid-week setlist shenanigans, from cover sets to exciting collaborations. As Anders Beck noted on this casual Hump Day, “Casual Wednesdays” are all about having fun.

For this edition of “Casual Wednesday,” each respective song shared at least one word from the title of one played before it. Following “Casual Wednesday“, the band continued into a cover of The Beatles‘ “A Day In The Life”, followed by their own new original, “Wish I Didn’t Know“. The theme continued right into “I Know You Rider”, followed by a transition into “Ryder’s Song”. The performance of the latter was just the second time they’ve ever played the song off their 2008 Five Interstates LP. Next came a two-song combination starting with another new original, “It’s Not Mine Anymore” and into “More of Me”.

The theme continued with “Courage for the Road“, followed by “Road to Nowhere” before going with songs based around “all” and “money” starting with “All Four”. The set came to a close with “All for Money”, followed by a cover of Dire Straits‘ “Money For Nothing”. The band’s two-song encore consisted of a pair of covers starting with “Eat My Dust“, originally penned by David Grisman, and closing with “Dustbowl Overture”.
