Jerry Garcia Black History Month Official Spotify Playlist

161

This week’s edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist shared by the official Jerry Garcia account. Posted in honor of Black History Month, the 38-song collection features African American musicians that influenced the late Grateful Dead guitarist.

A note accompanying the Jerry Garcia African-American Influences playlist states:

The history and development of rock & roll is synonymous with the African-American experience. To celebrate Black History Month and the unmistakable influence African-American musicians had on Jerry’s musical output, we’ve compiled a playlist of key recordings of black musicians that Jerry covered over the years in the Grateful Dead, JGB and more.

Among the featured musicians are such blues legends as Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Parker and Elizabeth Cotten. Also included are the soulful R&B sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Four Tops, Bill Withers and others. Reggae greats Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh, early rockers Chuck Berry and The Coasters, New Orleans icons Allen Toussaint and The Meters and several others help make up the playlist below:
