South Korean pop music, better known as K-pop, has exploded in popularity over the last several years. Originally a self-contained local music ecosystem, the music and its celebrity stars have gradually gained global appeal, turning K-pop into one of Korea’s biggest cultural exports (you can watch a short documentary about the global explosion of K-pop here).

On Monday night, K-pop girl group BLACKPINK took a big step in their world takeover with a musical guest spot on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, marking their debut performance on American TV. For their U.S. late-night debut, BLACKPINK—comprised of singers JisooJennieLisa, and Rosé—performed a rendition of their single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”, a hit song from their 2018 EP, Square Up. Anticipation for the performance was high, as the hashtag #BLACKPINKonLSSC trended worldwide in the leadup to the performance. Stephen Colbert himself was sold on the performance, tweeting later in the evening that The Late Show‘s twitter is “now a BLACKPINK stan account.”

In addition to the newly announced dates, BLACKPINK was recently announced as part of the 2019 Coachella lineup, making them the first K-pop group to lock in performances on both of the high profile festival’s two weekends.
