Kacey Musgraves was at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Monday to perform at the RodeoHouston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Texas venue just happened to also be the location where Selena Quintanilla-Pérez delivered her final performance on February 26th, 1995, just a month prior to her tragic murder in March of that year. So it was only fitting that Musgraves used the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Tejano singer by covering one of her biggest hits, “Como La Flor”, which found its way into the setlist in front of a very welcoming audience.
Musgraves’ cover of the 1992 Spanish-sung pop song came nine songs into her 13-song performance, following another cover of Brooks & Dunn‘s “Neon Moon”. Musgraves, who also grew up in Texas, sounded pretty confident in her pronunciation of the Spanish lyrics—a skill at which many of her pop contemporaries have failed miserably in the past. The singer was dwarfed by the size and scale of the rotating, star-shaped stage on which she was performing, in addition to the surrounding stadium, which can seat almost 72,000 attendees. That didn’t seem to stop her from stepping into Selena’s larger-than-life shoes in hopes of delivering a tribute fitting of someone as beloved as her.

Fans can watch a portion of the performance in the fan-shot video below. Musgraves can even be heard belting out, “I love the queen Selena just as much as you do!” towards the end of the video.
