Natalie Prass continues to keep a busy schedule of live performances and promotional appearances as part of her ongoing album cycle behind her 2018 studio LP, The Future and the Past. The latest media appearance featured her performance debut on NPR‘s Tiny Desk Concert series, which arrived on Monday.

For her first time performing on the popular online, office-based concert series, Prass and her band delivered a trio of tunes from the new album, starting with “Oh My”, continuing with “Short Court Style”, and closing with “Hot For the Mountain”. The performance began with a slightly funky rendition of “Oh My”. The groovy tune wasn’t too powerful or intense, but just strong enough to get the engine going to ease listeners into her trademark sound of soulful pop. Prass’ relaxed and melodically cheerful tones heard throughout the opening song were only lifted with the visual of her and her band all dressed in matching blue outfits.

Next up on her 12-minute performance was “Short Court Style”, the lead track from The Future and the Past and arguably the most fun. She was joined for the song by a pair of singers in Kenneka Cook and Angelica Garcia, who also come out of the Richmond, Virginia music scene along with Prass. In contrast to the studio version, Prass’ live version of “Short Court Style” was more toned down this time around, sounding much more dreamy and blissful than the radio-friendly studio version, but no less enchanting.

The final song of her performance, “Hot For the Mountain”, was, as she claimed, her favorite from the new album, and it’s clear to understand why after hearing it live in such an intimate setting. Cook and Garcia stayed on as backing vocalists as the band started into the song, which presents a mix of subtle instrumental touches ranging from chillwave to semi-psychedelia. Fans can watch the entire performance of all three songs in the video below.

Prass had spent some time on tour alongside Kacey Musgraves on her Oh What A World Tour earlier this year, with one more performance scheduled for March 2nd. Prass’ own run of concert dates will pick up again throughout the month of April followed by her appearance at Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta in early May.
