Phil Lesh & Terrapin Family Band Mashup Grateful Dead & Nirvana In Seattle

105

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh concluded a run in the Pacific Northwest on Sunday night at Seattle’s Showbox with The Terrapin Family Band. Lesh and his ensemble honored Seattle’s Nirvana by performing a mashup of “Lithium” and the Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil.

Grahame Lesh handled vocals on the “Me & My Uncle” opener before passing the baton to his dad for “Pride Of Cucamonga.” Guitarist Ross James then stepped into the spotlight to lead a cover of Jimi Hendrix’ “The Wind Cries Mary.” Next, multi-instrumentalist Alex Koford led the group through “They Love Each Other.” The set continued with a gorgeous “Teach Your Children” featuring Grahame, Alex and Elliott Peck harmonizing throughout. James was then tasked with delivering the Sunday sermon of “Samson & Delilah.” Peck had her turn up front for a cover of Lucinda Williams’ “I Lost It” ahead of the “Uncle John’s Band” set closer.

Last night’s second set began in a sweet way with “How Sweet It Is” and “Sweet Jane.” Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band then tore through the late ’60s classic “Mason’s Children” and threw in The Chantays’ surf rock gem “Pipeline” within. Next came a lengthy version of “Terrapin Station” featuring the “Jack O’ Roses” addendum. Grahame, Alex and Elliott went on to share lead vocals on “Scarlet Begonias” before Grahame channeled Levon Helm for “Up On Cripple Creek.” The tender “Comes A Time” was sung by Koford and James fronted a raucous “Turn On Your Love Light.” The wild Nirvana/Grateful Dead mashup found Jason Crosby on lead vocals and playing guitar. He sang the verses of “Friend Of The Devil” and the chorus of “Lithium.” For the encore, Phil & The TXR Family Band said farewell with “Not Fade Away.”
