On Friday night, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong made a stop at Chicago, IL’s Concord Music Hall. Chicago natives Mungion helped open the evening with a heavy-hitter set. Bassist Sean Carolan showed off the local love in a White Sox shirt, and guitarist Justin Reckamp acknowledged the band’s Chicago roots throughout the show. PPPP’s Greg Ormont said it best when thanking Mungion, exclaiming that the band would be headlining tours and selling out Concord Music Hall in no time. Mungion delivered a number of fan-favorites, as well as finishing their set with a cover of Lionel Richie’s“All Night Long”.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong walked on stage to a rowdy crowd, highlighted by drummer Alex Petropulos’ Sammy Sosa baseball jersey. The four-piece kicked off the night with a funky take on “Too Long”, before moving forward with “Something For Ya” and “Pop Off”, highlighted by some tasty guitar licks from Jeremy Schon. Fan-favorite “Julia” was up next, as the band knocked the crowd out of their shoes, literally. Fans hoisted their footwear up with the celebratory jam, before Pigeons invited up Justin Reckamp to lend a helping hand on “Lightning”, and a triple guitar attack blended together well. “Poseidon” led way into a lengthy quote of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica”. The quartet moved back into “Poseidon” before bringing the first set to a close with “Whirled”.

Following a brief setbreak, Ormont started the second set with a spot on impression of Mario’s “Letsa Go!”, and led his bandmates into “Upfunk”, which was highlighted by a dark intro. “Porcupine” followed before Ormont introduced a new song with “Sail On.” The new tune was highlighted by Ormont’s high-energy vocal capabilities. “The Liquid” acted like a palate cleanser before the band worked their way into a ska-tinged cover of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. “Sunny Day” and “Horizon” rounded out the set with a nice, smooth finish.

PPPP came out for a two-song encore of “Fun in Funk” and “Avalanche.” Before the encore, Ormont thanked the crowd for allowing the band to continue to live out their dreams and do what they love every night.
