Today marks the anniversary of the death of Devo’s Bob Casale who passed away in 2014 at the age of 61. The native of Kent, Ohio joined the groundbreaking art rock group in 1973 that soon would be at the forefront of the new wave in the late-1970s and early-1980s. Known equally for their infectious hit songs like “Whip It” and iconic “energy dome” red helmets and yellow jumpsuits, Devo was nominated in 2018 for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
This edition of Sunday Cinema is dedicated to the late Casale, who with his brother Gerald Casale, Bob Mothersbaugh, Mark Mothersbaugh and the late Alan Myers comprised the classic Devo lineup. The Casales, Mothersbaughs and Myers collaborated with Neil Young on his 1982 feature film Human Highway, including starring as Nuclear Garbagepersons.
A pivotal scene in the absurd film features Young and Devo performing Young’s “”Hey Hey My My” (Into the Black).” Mark Mothersbaugh employed his Booji Boy character for the scene. Watch the 10-min jam unfold in the video below:
