Spafford Dusts Off Johann Sebastian Bach Cover In Tampa

112

Spafford continued the Florida swing of their winter run on Friday as they pulled into Tampa Bay for a gig at The Orpheum. The four-piece act unearthed their take on Johann Sebastian Bach’s composition “Musette” to help close out their opening frame.

The Arizona-based band got their night going in The Sunshine State with the pairing of setlist staples “America” and “Backdoor Funk.” Spafford then offered up “Fuel,” delivering the track from their 2018 release For Amusement Only for just the seventh time since it was debuted in May of last year. The biggest surprise of the night followed as the quartet busted out their take on “Musette” for the first time in exactly five years to the day. The classical piece had last seen action on February 22, 2014 – a span of 343 shows and segued straight into a set-closing version of “Galisteo Way.”

“The Postman” was tapped to open up the second stanza with their recently debuted cover of Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry” following. The rarity “Space Gadget” got its first 2019 workout as it eventually made its way into Men At Work’s #1 hit “Down Under” from the Australian rock band’s debut album Business As Usual. “Ain’t That Wrong” brought the set to an end. Spafford delivered a two-song encore serving up the seamless pairing of the new original “Home (One Place I’ll Never Be)” and “The Reprise.”
