122

With the The Black Keys still on an indefinite hiatus, drummer Patrick Carney and John Petkovic of Cobra Verde, Sweet Apple, and Death Of Samantha have announced the formation of their new band, Sad Planets. Sad Planets’ debut album, Akron, Ohio, is due out on April 19th via Tee Pee Records.

On the new album, Petkovic plays guitar and handles lead vocals, while Carney plays drums and other added percussion instruments and synths. The album was recorded in Carney’s studio in Akron, and a press release calls the sessions “a celebration of their friendship.” Carney and Petkovic are both Akron, Ohio natives, though the former has moved to Nashville and the latter now resides in Cleveland. J Mascis, the Dinosaur Jr. frontman who also plays with Petkovic in Sweet Apple, makes a guest appearance on the forthcoming 10-track release.

Petkovic explains in a press statement, “I saw it as a chance to work with a longtime friend, but also an opportunity to reconnect with Akron in a very different way.”

The duo has shared Akron, Ohio’s lead single, “Not Of This World”, which you can listen to below:
