Avant-groove trio The Slip had one of their busiest years in 1999. As an example, the trio consisting of guitarist Brad Barr, drummer Andrew Barr and bassist Marc Friedman played two sets at two different venues on July 11, 1999 – just five days before they’d perform before approximately 10,000 music fans at Phish’s Camp Oswego festival. The group did the “two gigs in one day” thing a handful of times in 1999, including in April when they played three sets across the Northeast on April 17. Video footage of The Slip’s second set on July 11, 1999 serves as this week’s Full Show Friday selection. While this isn’t all of the three-piece’s performance, this is about as close to a full show as it gets when it comes to early The Slip on YouTube. There is a bonus at the bottom of the article.
On July 11, 1999 The Slip started the day with a performance at the Winter Island Blues Festival in Salem, Massachusetts. Brad, Andrew and Marc then loaded in their van to drive the 90 miles to Wendell State Park in Wendell, Massachusetts for a set at Schleigho’s Ho-Down music festival. In the middle of the first video below, we see a young Eric Krasno tuning his guitar. Krasno was on hand at the festival to perform with Soulive and hosted the inaugural Ho-Down two years earlier in his backyard.
The three-piece kicked off their set with “Co-op City,” a frequent opener at the time. Next up was “Johnny’s Tune,” a song the band would release on their Does album in 2000. The Slip continued on with a “Phase One” they expertly worked into Miles Davis’ “All Blues” and back again. The switch between the first video and second video takes place during “Phase One.” From there, we see future Does track “My Room” along with “Spice Groove” off the group’s 1997 debut album From The Gecko. Unfortunately, the video ends there so “Rhythm & Gold,” “Rhythm-a-ning” and “Eube” are missing. Watch video featuring most of the set shared by schleighofan:
