Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Originals & Covers In Fort Wayne

132

Umphrey’s McGee packed rarely played originals and covers into their show Thursday night at the Clyde Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The band’s first show in Fort Wayne in 15 years also saw Nicholas D’Virgilio of Spock’s Beard sit-in on percussion during the second set.

An improvisation-filled “It Doesn’t Matter” opened the show, followed by the fifth performance of “What We Could Get.” The pair of 2019 debuts were trailed by classics “Space Funk Booty,” the third “Pooh Doggie” since 2006, “Phil’s Farm” and the instrumental “Glory.” The set drew to a close with “Hurt Bird Bath” that surrounded a bust out of Peter Tosh’s “Steppin’ Razor,” which had not been played since 2017.

The second half kicked off with “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” and the rarely played “Search 4” which made its first setlist in over a year. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss led a rendition of “Mad Love” before D’Virgilio came out to join percussionist Andy Farag on “Wappy Sprayberry” that included a percussive breakdown. The band segued into their first offering of David Bowie’s “Fame” in over a year. The rarely played cover gave way to “Gulf Stream” during which guitarist Jake Cinninger called out his father in attendance. “Pay The Snucka” closed out the set with teases of Van Halen’s “Eruption.” The longtime UM staple “All In Time” was chosen for the encore during which UM dropped in one verse of the long-shelved original “10th Grade,” which hasn’t been played since 2004, and jammed on Bachman Turner Overdrive’s “Taking Care of Business.”

Umphrey’s McGee heads to The Fillmore Detroit tonight for the first of two shows. Webcasts are available via TourGigs. Watch the first and second set openers from Fort Wayne below:
