Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Nick Gerlach & Chuck Bartels In Detroit

177

Umphrey’s McGee concluded their February touring action with a two-night stand at The Fillmore in Detroit. The band’s Saturday night finale featured a pair of special guests.

The sextet opened with an expansive “Dump City” that was followed by a run of newer tunes “Push & Pull” and “Roctopus” as well as the classic “Der Bluten Kat.” UM fit their first “Nopener” since March 17, 2017 within “DBK.” Next, bassist Ryan Stasik was replaced by Sturgill Simpson’s bassist, Chuck Bartels for a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” which had been on the shelf for 71 shows. Saturday’s first set came to a close with “Hangover.”

Umphrey’s kicked off the closing stanza with their ninth-ever version of it’s not us tune “Dark Brush.” Then, saxophonist Nick Gerlach emerged for rarity “1000 Places To See Before You Die.” Next up was an adventurous “Attachements” that nearly hit the 20-minute mark before UM segued into the beloved “Hajimemashite.” Two more old favorites ended the frame: “The Triple Wide” and “2X2.” For the encore, the six-piece jammed “Conduit” into the end of the “Nothing Too Fancy” that had began one night earlier.
