We’re getting closer every day to the premiere of Avengers: Endgame, and we’re finally learning details about the movie’s final form. One thing seems sure—it will take its sweet time wrapping up a story that has stretched across 21 previous films.
Per Marvel, here is the official synopsis followed by the movie’s surprising length:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.
That’s pretty predictable to anyone who has seen the previous movies. The run time? An aggressively long 3 hours and 2 minutes.
In the past, movies that long had actual intermissions.
But speaking with Collider, directors Joe and Anthony Russo made their case for the length, saying they “think the movie is playing well” and that they have “had great responses from our test audiences and we’re feeling very good about where it is.”
Marvel boss Kevin Feige backed them up, saying the studio will “release the movie at the exact right running time.”
“[It’s] gonna be perfect,” Feige said, “It’s gonna be the exact running time that the movie needs to be.”
It takes time to properly tie it all up in a bow, we get that. But seriously, consider that intermission idea, Marvel. Have some mercy on the viewers’ bladders.
Avengers: Endgame is in theaters April 26, 2019.
