On Tuesday, Bob Weir and Wolf Bros continued their ongoing trek with a performance at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, FL. The show featured the customary Wolf Bros mix of Grateful Dead favorites, Bob Weir solo tunes, and Bob Dylan covers, in addition to one big, Phish-y surprise: A two-song sit-in by keyboardist Page McConnell.

The core trio—comprised of Weir, bassist Don Was, and drummer Jay Lane—began the show with lovely renditions of “Friend of the Devil” and by Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece”. A pair of Weir solo songs came next in “Gonesville” and “Bombs Away”, followed by a cover of Daniel Lanois‘s “The Maker”. After a spirited “Althea”, the trio worked through a classic Bobby Dead pairing, “Lost Sailor” > “Saint of Circumstance”, to close set one.

When the band emerged for their second set, they brought Page McConnell along with them to add some keys to the mix. McConnell’s piano helped augment the set’s first two songs, “Hell In A Bucket” and “Scarlet Begonias”. He also added some backing vocals to the latter. As the Chairman of the Boards took his bows, Weir instructed the audience to “Say, ‘Thank you, Page.’”

The sit-in was a welcome surprise for fans of Phish and the Dead, as the keyboardist rarely offers his talents for guest spots outside of his immediate musical circle. Last year, he notably made guest appearances with Phish bandmate Mike Gordon in Burlington and with Vida Blue bandmate Russell Batiste in New Orleans. However, McConnell had not performed onstage with Weir since the Grateful Dead guitarist joined Phish for an extended guest appearance in Nashville back in 2016.

Once McConnell made his exit, Weir, Was, and Lane dove back into the RatDog repertoire with “Odessa”, followed by Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”, the Dead’s “Weather Report Suite”, moving Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter ballad “Standing on the Moon”, and a set-closing “Throwing Stones”. Finally, the trio returned to the stage for a sing-along “U.S. Blues” encore.
