Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Maren Morris formed the supergroup The Highwomen. Social media posts indicate the previously hinted at group held recording sessions with producer Dave Cobb at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A.

Shires “accidentally jumped the gun” when discussing The Highwomen project during a radio interview in January. At that time, Shires named Margo Price as a potential participant in the group taking its name from The Highwaymen supergroup comprised of outlaw country legends Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

“The whole idea started with Amanda Shires,” Carlile stated. “Like we were basically hanging out and we got to know each other, became fast friends, fell in love, and she said we should start like a political movement. She was like, ‘Yeah. We can call it The Highwomen.’ She’s like, ‘And not high like high, but like exulted.’”

Social media posts from The Highwomen in the studio show Carlile, Shires and Morris along with Cobb and guitarist (and Shires’ husband) Jason Isbell and his 400 Unit band mate, keyboardist Derry DeJoria. Also assembled at RCA Studio A were Carlile’s band mates, bassist Phil Hanseroth, guitarist Tim Hanseroth and drummer Chris Powell. Former Gregg Allman Band keyboardist (who has collaborated with Shires) Peter Levin was part of the sessions as well. Rolling Stone notes that Carlile revealed Sheryl Crow was recruited to play bass for the project which is said to “feature a rotating cast.”
