Laushaus: Laushaus

Gonna get into some instrumental music the next couple weeks. We’ll start off with some of the heavy shit and next week we’ll get into the more delicate, quiet stuff. So get ready to turn up the volume! We’ll start with some Ne York City-area jams courtesy of Laushaus — a kind of supergroup of guys you may or may not have heard of, but definitely should listen to. The band is Mathias Kunzli on drums/percussion, Jonathan Goldberger on guitar, Kyle Sanna on guitar and Todd Sickafoose on bass and their self-titled debut is just out on Chant Records. These guys have made a lot of great noise in other bands and together they’re a rage-and-a-half. Sweet double-guitars, deep rhythms and plenty of that don’t-look-back adventurous improvisational spirit. I think you’ll dig!

Muscle Tough: Modern Romance

Next up is the Philadelphia trio Muscle Tough. This is your traditional drums-bass-guitar setup, but the sounds on their newest release, Modern Romance is some fresh, instrumental sweetness. Rocking elements of math-rock and funk, it’s a treat for both your head and your boogie. And while it’s pretty heady and dense, there’s also a welcome dollop of play in there, you can feel the three guys having a blast making this music and they get weird in some fun ways. There are tracks that are barely a minute long and some that stretch out for a few focused moments. Good stuff, check it out!

Sunwatchers: Illegal Moves

I love the first two picks, check them out early and often, for sure, but I have to say, this week I’ve saved the best for last as Sunwatchers have one of my favorite records of the first quarter of the year in Illegal Moves. This NYC quartet has been featured here before, but if you’re new to the band, they’re a slam-a-delic psychjazzfunk band with a killer sound. Saxophone and guitar create sheets of distorted melody against some jamming rhythms, almost too much, but actually just the right amount. This new one finds the band at its very best: irresistible, mind-altering and yes, maybe more than a little bit angry. If you haven’t heard this one yet, well, don’t wait another second. Back with more next week … enjoy!
