Ryan Reynolds Shares Touching John Candy Tribute on Anniversary of Comedy Icon’s Death

John Candy is a certified comedy legend today. The late Canadian actor passed away 25 years ago, but since then his legacy has only grown.

And if he’s beloved around the world for iconic characters like the title role in Uncle Buck or his poignant turn as Del Griffith in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, or hell, even his role as Jack Chester in Summer Rental, you can take that love and add steroids when it comes to how Canadians feel about the man.

Deadpool star and adept comedic actor Ryan Reynolds is one of those Canadians, and for the anniversary of Candy’s untimely death, Reynolds posted the moving video above.

“We cooked up a small tribute to a comedic genius and Canadian hero,” he tweeted in part, “If you haven’t seen much of his work, take a look at his films. He was a treasure.”

Candy was just 43 when he died while filming Wagons East! in Mexico. In a TV and movie career that spanned the early 70s to the early 1990s, he managed to leave an indelible impression on everyone who saw his work.

As Reynolds later tweeted in response to someone else: “I’ve had Planes, Trains & Automobiles memorized for over twenty years. So funny and so heartbreaking.”
