Spafford kicked off a two-night run at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael on Saturday night. The rising jam act debuted their take on the oft-covered Leonard Cohen classic “Hallelujah” along with dusting a cover from Eagles during their two-set show.

The quartet got their night off the ground with a take on Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City” from his classic 1973 album Innervisions. The Arizona-based band, who have a penchant for extended, exploratory jams, would lean in on material from their most recent studio album For Amusement Only for the majority of their five-song opening set. The four-piece would deliver album cuts “Mind’s Unchained,” “Leave The Light On” and “The Postman” from their 2018 LP.

Spafford would look to their recently debuted new original “Comfortable” to open up their second set of the night. The pairing of fan-favorites “Electric Taco” and “Backdoor Funk” came ahead of their first surprise of the night as they dusted off their take on Eagles’ “Those Shoes.” The track from the California country-rock act’s 1979 release The Long Run had been sitting untouched since January 25, 2018 – a span of 120 shows and was offered up for just the third time ever. The rarity “The Man” followed, which made its way into the setlist for just the seventh time since it was debuted in 2016. “Beautiful Day” segued into the debut of Cohen’s “Hallelujah” as the band closed out the frame with the singer-songwriter’s signature tune from 1984’s Various Positions. Spafford tapped setlist staple “All In” for their lone encore at the first of two at Terrapin Crossroads.
