Son Volt’s new album Union is available to stream in advance of its official release this Friday, March 29. The 13-track record premiered via Garden & Gun.

Frontman Jay Farrar wrote the songs making up Union, which serves as the follow-up to 2017’s Notes Of Blue. Portions of the new album were ecorded in Mount Olive, Illinois at the Mother Jones Museum and in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Woody Guthrie Center. Joining Farrar for the sessions were longtime Son Volt members, multi-instrumentalist Mark Spencer and bassist Andrew DuPlantis, along with guitarist Chris Frame (who had previously toured with the band) and drummer Mark Patterson.

“I felt doing it in a more challenging environment might inspire us along the way,” Farrar stated. “Doing mobile recordings was a way to push myself a little bit. It also pushed Jacob Detering, our engineer, who had to assemble a mobile unit and did a great job.”
