Surf Rock Legend Dick Dale Has Died, Age 81

Dick Dale, who has been dubbed the pioneer of surf rock, has sadly passed away at age 81.

The news was confirmed to The Guardian by Dale’s live bassist, Sam Bolle. He died on Saturday night after a long battle with many health issues, including rectal cancer, a damaged vertebrae, kidney failure and diabetes.

Dale was truly a legend, with his 1962 hit ‘Misirlou’ synonymous with the genre. The song is also recognisable as the iconic theme to Quentin Tarantino’s classic film Pulp Fiction.

Tributes are pouring in online for the icon, real name Richard Monsour, and thanks have been given for his undeniable impact on the industry. Former bandmate Dusty Watson took to Facebook to write “the legend and king of surf guitar has passed.”

“Condolences to family and friends and all those who were touched by your undeniable presence,” he wrote. “Rest In Peace friend.”
