The Allman Betts Band Makes Official Debut At Brooklyn Bowl: Full Show Pro-Shot Video

159

The Allman Betts Band made their public debut on Wednesday night with a concert at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. Devon Allman and Duane Betts are joined in the group by bassist Berry Oakley Jr., guitarist Johnny Stachela, drummers/percussionists John Lum and R. Scott Bryan and keyboardist John Ginty. The Allman Brothers Band co-founding members’ offspring and the rest of the ensemble treated fans to a mix of material from their forthcoming debut album Down To The River, songs from their solo careers, ABB classics and choice covers.

Up first were originals “All Night” and “Melodies Are Memories” before Duane sang “Blue Sky,” a song his father wrote for inclusion on The Allman Brothers Band’s 1972 album Eat A Peach. Devon then stepped into the spotlight for “Left My Heart In Memphis” from his time in Royal Southern Brotherhood ahead of Betts leading his own “Taking Time.” Next, the group launched into a typically adventurous “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” Allman and Betts went on to take seats for acoustic renditions of Gregg Allman’s “Multi-Colored Lady” and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Seven Turns.” Duane left the stage for Devon to front “Mahalo” and then vocalist Jessica Lynn emerged for a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

The evening’s final ABB original was “Dreams” featuring Devon on lead vocals and scorching slide guitar work from Duane. For the encore, The Allman Betts Band returned with the original “Good Ol’ Days” and then surprised the crowd with a southern rock-tinged version of the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street” featuring guest guitarist Andy Aledort.
