Trey Anastasio Guests With Mike Gordon In Boston

160

Mike Gordon continued his first solo tour of 2019 on Saturday as he passed the midway point of a four-night run at The Sinclair in Boston. Gordon had something special in store as the bassist was joined by his Phish band mate Trey Anastasio on guitar for the majority of the second set and encore at 525-person capacity club.

The five-piece act that includes guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers got their night in Beantown going with a pair of tracks from 2017’s OGOGO looking to “Whirlwind” and “Equilibrium.” Fiona Apple’s “Sleep To Dream” came ahread of the recently debuted originals “My Favorite Mistake,” and “Tropical Rocket.” “Noon To Noon,” which Gordon had previously shared is part of a new record he is working on with Leo Kottke came ahead of set-closing takes on “Angatta” and “Sughn Never Sets.”

Gordon & Co. opened their second frame with their fourth new tune of the evening looking to “I Am Random.” Anastasio emerged next, locking in with the quintet first on “Victim” and then on the Overstep cut “Peel.” Last night marked the first time that Trey had guested with his longtime friend and bandmate since April 4, 2014, when he sat in for a cover of Talking Heads’ “Cities” at the Tarrytown Music Hall.

The augmented ensemble would work their way through covers of Jon Cleary’s “Got To Be More Careful” and The Flaming Lips’ “Are You A Hypnotist” along with Murawski’s “Acid Man” and Gordon/Murawski’s “Crazy Sometimes.” “How Many People Are You,” which has pulled double-duty as a crossover in both the bass player’s solo and full-time bands closed out the set. Trey emerged with the band as they returned for the encore as they nodded to local heroes Aerosmith with a cover of “Sweet Emotion.”
