Warren Haynes & Larry Campbell Team With Little Feat In New York City

198

Little Feat brought their 50th Anniversary Tour to New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Friday. The iconic and influential band welcomed Warren Haynes for a pair of songs and were joined by multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell for the majority of their night.

The Midnight Ramble Band was tapped to open the evening and offered up a selection of tunes from their days backing Levon Helm. The Campbell-led ensemble worked their way through The Band’s “This Wheel’s On Fire,” “The Shape I’m In,” “Life Is A Carnival” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.” The opening set also included takes on “Poor Old Dirt Farmer” from Helm’s 2007 solo album Dirt Farmer and the traditional gospel blues song “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning.”

Little Feat, who was backed by The Midnight Ramble Horns for most of their celebratory 13-song main set, leaned in on some of their most beloved tunes to get things going. “Rocket In My Pocket” from 1977’s Time Loves A Hero, “Down On The Farm” the title track from their seventh studio album, Feats Don’t Fail Me Now cut “Oh! Atlanta” and “All That You Dream” from The Last Record Album started things off. Campbell would emerge next and remain on stage for the middle portion of the frame.

Campbell’s portion of the night was highlighted by the pairing of the trucker classic “Willin’” with “Don’t Bogart That Joint.” The ensemble then worked their way through a number of tunes from The Band’s repertoire, delivering takes on “Long Black Veil,” “The Weight” and “Rag Mama Rag.” Midnight Ramble Band keyboardist Brian Mitchell also helped out on “The Weight” and “Rag Mama Rag.” Haynes would take to the stage a song later, stepping up to sing lead on “Spanish Moon.” The Gov’t Mule frontman would then lend a hand on a jammed-out, set-closing take on “Dixie Chicken.” Little Feat offered up “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” as their lone encore at the Beacon Theatre.
