On March 24th, 1990, Eric Clapton starred as the musical guest for Saturday Night Live for the first time in his career.

For his debut performance on the American sketch comedy show, he played “Pretending,” “No Alibis,” and “Wonderful Tonight.” Clapton would later go on to be the musical guest for the show’s 20th season premiere in 1994 with host Steve Martin, which, at the time, held the record for the most-watched season premiere of the show with 12.201 million viewers.

You can check out videos from Clapton’s first performance on SNL below, including a behind-the-scenes video of Clapton rehearsing with the band, consisting of bassist Nathan East, keys player Greg Phillinganes, drummer Steve Ferrone, and guitarist Phil Palmer.
