Singer-songwriter Anders Osborne released “Running,” the latest single from his first album of 2019. Buddha & The Blues is due out April 26 via Back On Dumaine Records.

“It’s a dialogue about the endless chasing of things that have no spiritual meaning to me,” Osborne told Rolling Stone about the song. “Goals I’ve been trained to believe in and strive for. In asking myself these questions, I find that I am just running, going absolutely nowhere with no specific outcome in mind. Escaping the present moment at any cost, including my health and serenity.”

Anders wrote “Running” in his hometown of New Orleans before bringing it to sessions held at Brethern Studios in Ojai, California that yielded the album. Neil Young collaborator Chad Cromwell produced the LP and plays drums on Buddha & The Blues. The rest of Osborne’s band for the record consisted of famed studio musicians guitarist Waddy Wachtel (Stevie Nicks, Keith Richards, Linda Rondstadt, Warren Zevon), bassist Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, John Lennon, Don Henley), Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ keyboardist Benmont Tench and backing vocalist Windy Wagner (Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart).

“[It] started out as a folky fingerpicking idea in my backyard,” added Osborne. “I was trying to talk about someone else that I had in mind that never deals with their most important issues internally, but just goes full steam ahead filling their life with pointless activities. A person that knows that something has to change — even knows what those changes are — but they still don’t do it. Then, at the end of writing the tune, I realized it was me.”
