Record executive, producer, and musician Don Was has been named a co-recipient of the “PPL Lifetime Achievement Award” at this year’s Jazz FM Awards, to take place at the Shoreditch Town Hall in London on April 30th.

Was, who just finished up his second tour with Bob Weir and Wolf Bros band, is also the CEO of Blue Note Records. The legendary record company is also named as a recipient in the special recognition. Throughout his long and successful career, Was has helped produce albums for artists including Carly Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Brian Wilson, and John Mayer. His work on The Rolling Stones’ 2016 blues cover album, Blue & Lonesome, would go on to win a Grammy award for “Best Traditional Blues Album.”

“Jazz is what inspired me to become a musician many years ago, and it is incredibly rewarding and humbling to serve as the caretaker for this historic and hugely important label,” Was said in a statement to Billboard about the honor. “It’s a responsibility I welcome and one that I take very seriously. This honour is especially meaningful coming from Jazz FM, who not only keeps the jazz legacy alive but carries the torch forward by recognizing and supporting the great jazz that is being created today.”

PPL CEO Peter Leathem also added, “For five decades, Don has written, performed and produced some of the most well-known music in the jazz and blues genres. His leadership of the iconic Blue Note Records label, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, has demonstrated that Don’s passion for jazz remains. It is a pleasure to award him – and Blue Note Records.”

Was, along with Bob Weir and Wolf Bros, may have wrapped their 2019 winter tour, but fans can still catch the trio when they play night one of Beachlife Festival in Redondo Beach, CA on May 3rd. Fans can visit the event website for ticket options.
