Karina Rykman Experiment Covers Wilco & Unveils Originals In Brooklyn: Full Show Audio

146

Bassist Karina Rykman of Marco Benevento‘s band led her own group, the Karina Rykman Experiment on Wednesday night at Rough Trade in Brooklyn. Rykman, guitarist Adam November and drummer Chris Corsico presented a mix of originals and covers including a take on Wilco‘s “Spiders (Kidsmoke).” Previous gigs had focused mainly on pure improvisation.

The trio opened up with their own “Plants” and “Elevator” before unearthing a cover of Porno For Pyros’ 1993 hit “Pets.” From there, the Karina Rykman Experiment played the reggae-tinged original “Goji Island” and the Primus-esque “2fish 1fish.” A pair of covers followed as the band went the funk route for George McCrae’s 1975 single “I Get Lifted” and then debuted the aforementioned “Spiders (Kidsmoke).” Wilco recorded the song with the pulsing beat for 2004’s A Ghost Is Born. November channeled Wilco’s Nels Cline by utilizing wild tones and Front Of House engineer Julian Booker panned the sound from side to side as the guitarist shredded. For the finale, Karina led her ensemble through a jammed-out version of the bombastic instrumental “Penne Alla Vodka.”
