Listen To Eric Clapton Perform Electric ‘Layla’ For First Time Since 2013

Eric Clapton dusted off the electric version of “Layla” on Saturday night at the first show of his current residency at the Budokan in Tokyo. Clapton, who also collaborated with John Mayer during his 2019 debut, hadn’t used an electric guitar to perform “Layla” since 2013.

The legendary guitarist famously introduced the Derek & The Dominos gem to a new generation in 1992 by re-working the song for a taping of MTV’s Unplugged. Clapton issued the acoustic “Layla” as part of his Unplugged concert film and live album. While EC went with the electric version of the tune to start his 50th Anniversary Tour in 2013, he eventually added an acoustic segment that featured “Layla.” Ever since, the English axeman has stuck with the acoustic take as part of his live shows. On Saturday, Clapton finally went electric on the song.
