The Avett Brothers To Premiere New Stage Musical, ‘Swept Away’

137

The music of The Avett Brothers will be the basis for a new original stage musical, Swept Away, set to premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, CA beginning in June 2020.

The musical will feature songs from across The Avett Brothers’ extensive repertoire, with a story largely inspired by their 2004 album, Mignonete. As Seth Avett explains in a statement,

This new and original story built with our songs has revealed meanings and connections which Scott [Avett] and I never could have imagined otherwise. … Beyond the unique joy and somewhat surreal experience of watching the project develop, it has been an honor to work with everyone involved; writer John Logan has led the way with talent, motivation and inspiration.

The Avett Brothers joined forces with a pair of Tony Award-winning creatives to craft Swept Away: playwright and screenwriter John Logan (Red, Broadway’s Moulin Rouge!, Skyfall, Gladiator) and director Michael Mayer (American Idiot, Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch). Swept Away will feature musical arrangements and orchestrations by Chris Miller and Brian Usifer.

As John Logan notes in a statement, “It’s been a total pleasure working with The Avett Brothers and living inside their music. … I am constantly inspired by the sheer variety of their work and its utter truth and soulfulness.”
