The Dean Ween Group Makes 2019 Debut In Denver: Full Show Audio

Over the weekend, The Dean Ween Group made their 2019 debut in Denver, Colorado, headlining The Puff Ball at Summit Music Hall. Notably, the performance also served as a special offsite performance from Dean Ween‘s Honeypot Lounge, the Ween guitarist’s newly opened cannabis-friendly concert venue.

The evening began with a performance from the Color Red All Stars, a supergroup for Eddie Roberts‘ fledgling record label and media company in the Mile High City. For Saturday’s iteration, The New Mastersounds guitarist was joined by Big Gigantic drummer Jeremy Salken and former trumpeter for The Motet, Gabe Mervine.

Following the funk-focused set, Dean Ween and company took the stage for their celebratory performance, marking the Dean Ween Group’s first show in Denver since their New Year’s Eve run with Dumpstaphunk at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom. Throughout the night, the ensemble was accompanied by special guest Michael Hampton, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted guitarist from George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic.

The band opened with a take on “The Ritz Carlton” off their 2018 sophomore album rock2. Next up was a bounding rendition of “Exercise Man” from DWG’s debut LP, 2016’s The Deaner Album, followed by a shred-heavy and wailing “Waste Station 9.” For a change in pace, the group made use of Hampton’s presence, offering a cover of Funkadelic’s psychedelic “Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo-Doo Chasers),” a classic from 1978’s One Nation Under Groove. They then drew from Funkadelic’s sixth studio album, 1974’s Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, for a take on “Red Hot Mama” to finish out the segment.

A heavy “I’ll Take It (And Break It)” marked a return to the group’s original catalog, reanimating the crowd with The Deaner Album song’s no-holds-barred energy. Another Deaner Album track followed in the form of “Garry,” which offered a pleasant contrast to the prior tune with its meandering and easy-going guitar riffs. Next, the band offered up an upbeat fan-favorite, “Mercedez Benz,” before landing in ‘Love Theme From “Skinheads Kicking Your Ass’.”

With the show winding down, the Deaner looked to his catalog with Ween for “Frank,” with the song from 1991’s The Pod quickly earning cheers from the crowd. A discordant “Fingerbangin’” led in to a sequence of two covers — Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop” and Ween’s “The Rift” — to close out the show. For the final song of the night, the band offered up “Sunset Over Belmar,” a delightful cascading number from last year’s rock2.
