Ghost-Note took the Suwannee Rising Music Festival by storm over the weekend, laying down their bright, expressive funk for the inaugural event. Drummer and MC Robert Sput Searight, percussionist Nate Werth, bassist MonoNeon, keyboardist Vaughn “V.Keys” Henry, guitarist Peter Knudsen, and horn/woodwind players Sylvester Onyejiaka and Jonathan Mones rained their funk thunder down on the crowd for two solid sets of amazing original jams on both Friday and Saturday of the weekend affair.

Suwannee Rising may be a new enterprise, but the Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park is certainly no stranger to the strains of funk echoing through its gorgeous environs. Home of the late Bear Creek, the park and its loyal fans were open-armed to the new experience, and the arrival of Ghost-Note certainly punctuated the vibe that makes events like these last for years to come.

Since Ghost-Note is such a seasoned group of veteran players, even fans who anticipated an impressive set found themselves astounded by the band’s sheer musical density. The ever-moving pocket set up by Searight served as a sonic challenge to his fellow players to keep sharp and ready to move and groove. That challenge was more than met by his cohorts in the rhythm section, with percussionist Nate Werth adding much-appreciated depth to the beat while bassist MonoNeon laid down the fiery funk. The alternately lush and flourishing keys provided by Henry and the slinky guitar riffs from Knudsen fleshed out the middle of the groove while the horn section of Onyejiaka and Mones sliced through the mix like brass surgeons.

The end result was irresistible, and over the course of their Friday and Saturday sets, it’s a safe bet that Ghost-Note won themselves new fans in the form of literally everyone within earshot. Check out some videos from Ghost-Note at Suwannee Rising below, courtesy of L4LM’s own Rex-A-Vision.
