Bob Weir And Wolf Bros Close Day One Of BeachLife Festival With Help From Chris Robinson, Jackie Greene [Full-Show Video]

193

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros, the trio comprised of Bob WeirJay Lane, and Don Was, were back in action on Friday with their first show since their winter tour finale on March 30th. The band, which mostly performs stripped-down interpretations of music from the Grateful Dead‘s live catalog and other notable covers, was the scheduled headliner for night one of the inaugural BeachLife Festival taking place in Redondo Beach, CA this weekend.

The band’s 12-song performance took place just as the California sun began to drop below the horizon, as one attendee described it. The set started with a pair of early-Dead classics, “Jack Straw” and “Cassidy”, before continuing into “Only A River”, “Peggy-O”, and their rendition of Kris Kristofferson‘s “Me and Bobby McGee”. Weir and Lane then reached into their old RatDog songbook to perform “Two Djinn” before turning on the jams for “The Other One”. Next up was “Standing on The Moon”, a ballad from the Dead’s 1989 Built To Last LP.

Weir then led the charge in picking the energy back up with performances of “The Music Never Stopped” and “Easy Answers” to close the set. The band returned to start their encore with “Not Fade Away”, which ended up featuring a sit-in from singer Chris Robinson and guitarist Jackie Greene. Robinson took his place at the mic to help with the lyrics while also letting loose on some improvised vocal work during the jam portion of The Crickets cover. Greene also added to the group jam by working his way up and down the neck of his guitar with some slick slide parts as Weir also played along across the stage to close the set. Following the group performance, the trio returned to close the show with a performance of Jerry Garcia‘s timeless Dead ballad, “Ripple”. Fans can relive the band’s entire performance from Friday the pro-shot video below.
