On April 10, a group of students from CU Denver’s Music Performance Program performed their 2019 Junior Recital at Denver music venue Your Mom’s House. The performance — which featured students Dylan Kober, Caden Kramer and Zach Bulgarelli as well as bandmates Carl Hernandez-Stopp, Jake Greenberg and Bharat Bhargava — found the collective performing complex Phish compositions as well as a number of jazz classics.
Two Trey Anastasio-penned were on the docket for the evening. First up was a nearly 13-minute “Stash,” which drummer Zach Bulgarelli introduced by quipping, “If you feel uncomfortable at any point, then we’re probably doing a good job at playing this next one.” Later in the night, the group moved into a jazzy 16-minute rendition of “You Enjoy Myself,” which offered the students space to expand and improvise. Other selections from the evening included a take on John Scofield‘s “Let The Cat Out” off 1995’s Groove Elation, Joe Pass’ “Catch Me (Forward Pass)” and jazz standard “Lady Bird.”
