Dave Matthews Band frontman Dave Matthews spoke with SiriusXM’s Ari Fink during Jazz Fest in New Orleans about a variety of topics. Four clips from the chat have been shared as a preview of Dave Matthews Band Radio, which returns to SiriusXM satellite radio this Friday.
One topic discussed was the follow-up to DMB’s 2018 studio album Come Tomorrow. “I’d like to get into the studio with this new lineup, because I think we’re in a really great place so hopefully sometime soon,” Matthews said. “We always have a lot of music that is mostly in the can already and I’ve been writing as well,” Dave added. He explained that he gets idea from what drummer Carter Beauford and bassist Stefan Lessard play. In terms of reexamining old material for use on a new studio album, Matthews said “There’s no reason not to go back and look at what we made because we made it.”
Another discussion was focused on the difference between audiences in Europe and America. “With this band, I feel like we play differently for the room. If you’re playing in the Czech Republic the audience is quiet and you could hear a pin drop. And you might hear one American scream ‘Wooo!’ but it will stop because I feel like someone is next to them who says ‘I will kill you if you scream during this performance,’” Matthews told Fink.
He explained that there’s a dynamic from almost as silence to as loud as you want to get. “It covers a wide spectrum of noise and expression,” Dave added. “One thing about this band is that we are honestly a live band and every night is an exchange between us and the audience.” Watch Dave talk about heading back into the studio, the difference between U.S. and European audiences, his days as a Magician’s Assistant and whether he’ll revive his acting career in the videos below:
