Umphrey’s McGee brought out G. Love of opening act G. Love & Special Sauce and saxophonist Mike Quinn of Doom Flamingo for a Rolling Stones cover on Friday night in Charlotte. The concert took place at Romare Bearden Park as part of the Charlotte SHOUT! Festival.
After G. Love & Special Sauce kicked off the action, Umphrey’s began the first of two sets with well-jammed versions of “Remind Me” and “Slacker.” The sextet then worked “Sociable Jimmy” within “Nemo.” Next, “Roulette” led into “Triple Wide” before G. Love and Mike Quinn emerged for “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.” Last night was just the third time UM covered the song from The Rolling Stones’ 1971 album Sticky Fingers since 2017. Quinn is UM bassist Ryan Stasik‘s band mate in Doom Flamingo.
Friday’s second set was one big “Nothing Too Fancy” sequence. A transition into “Partyin’ Peeps” followed the first bout of “Nothing Too Fancy,” while “Glory” gave way to the end of the song. In between was a version of “Bridgeless” that featured “Attachments” and “Wappy Sprayberry” in its midst. Umphrey’s McGee ended the night by dusting off their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” after 69 shows.
