Metallica Works Multiple Rarities Into European Tour Opener In Lisbon

114

On May 1, Metallica kicked off the newest leg of their European tour in support of 2016’s Hardwired … to Self-Destruct. Continuing the third year of their WorldWired tour, the rock icons deviated from their traditional setlist during the performance, which took place at the Estadio do Restalo in Lisbon, Portugal.

After their new album’s title track “Hardwired” opened the show, the rockers wasted no time offering their first tour debut of the night, “Disposable Heroes.” Though they performed the track last fall during the All Within My Hands Benefit Concert, the 1986 Master of Puppets track hadn’t been performed during the Worldwired tour nor since fall of 2015. After fan-favorite album namesake “Ride the Lightning,” the heavy metal act again offered another tour debut, performing “The God That Failed” for the first time since June 24, 2012.

Following the bust out from their 1991 self-titled release, Metallica stuck fairly close to the script, offering two new songs, “Here Comes Revenge” and “Moth Into Flame,” between older tracks “The Unforgiven” and “Sad But True.” A highlight of the night was “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” which replaced “Fade To Black” on the setlist. During the song, and continued their tradition of a nightly open-ended collaboration, with last night’s edition featuring a cover of “Censurados, Xutos & Pontapés” as well as originals “ManUNkind” and “Orion.”

After the “Kirk/Rob Doodle,” Metallica swiftly moved into a bust out of “Frantic,” the St. Anger track that hadn’t been performed since December of 2011. The group then moved through more characteristic fare, offering “One,” “Master of Puppets,” “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “Creeping Death” and “Seek & Destroy” to close out the main set. Returning for encore, the band offered the live debut of Hardwired‘s “Lords of Summer,” marking the first time the final studio version had ever been played in concert. The show closed out in full with renditions of “Nothing Else Matters” and mega-hit “Enter Sandman.”
