The String Cheese Incident kicked off a three-night stand in New Orleans on Thursday with a performance at the Orpheum Theatre. SCI dug deep into their repertoire to unearth a Joe Zawinul/Cannonball Adderley cover and also brought out Mike Dillon for a guest spot.
After opening with “Song In My Head,” Cheese performed the Joe Zawinul-penned “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” in the midst of “Missin’ Me.” Cannonball Adderley scored a hit with “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” in 1967, a song which SCI last played on July 30, 2003. “Can’t Stop Now” emerged out of “Missin’ Me” and gave way to “Falling Through The Cracks” before “Search,” “Texas” and “Bollymunster” ended the first set. The second set began with an expansive “Can’t Wait Another Day” and a cover of Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved.”
The recent Sound Lab single “Gone Crooked” bled into a “One Step Closer” connected with “Tinder Box” via “Drums.” Next, SCI covered “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” before bringing the frame to a close with “Shine.” Mike Dillon, Cheese drummer Michael Travis and percussionist Jason Hann started the encore with a percussion jam. The sextet then went at it alone to end the night by performing a take on Bob Dylan’s “Quinn The Eskimo.” SCI plays Mardi Gras World in New Orleans on Friday and Saturday nights.
