On Friday, Brooklyn-based nine-piece funk powerhouse Turkuaz released their latest studio EP, Afterlife Vol. 1. The five tracks on the new release, as well as those on the upcoming Afterlife Vol 2. release, which is due out later this summer, were recorded during the 2016-2018 sessions that brought the band’s recent Life In The City album to life.
Turkuaz’s new Afterlife Vol. 1 includes a stripped-down original demo of the band’s “On The Run” single, studio versions of live fan-favorites “Take It Slow” and “Gogo Mr. Dodo”, along with previously unheard songs “Roll Away” and “Mojo Filter.” “Roll Away” is based on a groove that bassist Taylor Shell conceptualized and “Mojo Filler” was brought to life from a jam Turkuaz created during a sporadic basement session in the wake of a canceled festival set.
Turkuaz frontman and guitarist Dave Brandwein shared his thoughts on the new project in a press release. He explained,
The process of making the record truly started back when making demos at my apartment. I was between studios and took it as an opportunity to start writing. I put together the demo for ‘On the Run’ one night while sitting in my room, layering parts on synths and guitars. Determined not to use the drum machine sequence I made, we went to a studio to record Mikey [Carubba]‘s drums and some percussion from Nate Werth (Snarky Puppy, Ghost Note).
Brandwein also shared his thoughts on “Take It Slow” and “Gogo Mr. Dodo”. He continued,
Both songs started as demos by Craig Brodhead (guitar/keys), which I wrote the lyrics and melody over. In both cases, I knew that I was not the one who should sing these songs. Josh [Schwartz, saxophone] and Shira [Elias, vocals] respectively embody the vibe of these tunes so well and make them completely their own, so their voices are featured on the tracks.
