Dead & Company Brave Chilly Weather For Night One At The Gorge [Videos/Recap]

201

Dead & Company made their way George, Washington for the first of two shows at the Gorge Amphitheatre on Friday night as the latest stop on their ongoing spring/summer tour. Following a pair of performances in sunny Los Angeles earlier in the week, the members of Dead & Company found themselves trading their sunblock in for jackets and knit hats for the trip north to the picturesque outdoor venue.

The band took the stage to open the show by grooving their way right into “Feels Like Stranger” with Bob Weir leading the charge on vocals. The opening set continued with lively renditions of early-Dead tunes in “Cumberland Blues”, “Dire Wolf” and “Loose Lucy”. The band then delivered their live debut of Robert Hunter‘s “It Must Have Been The Roses”, which originally appeared on Jerry Garcia‘s 1976 Reflections solo album. The band sent the audience into set break with a fitting rendition of “The Music Never Stopped”.

Night had fallen across the wide open sky above The Gorge by the time the band returned to the stage to start the second half of the show. That didn’t stop them from opening the second set with “Here Comes Sunshine”, with Weir, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and even pianist Jeff Chimenti all stepping up to their microphones to help sing the song’s group chorus. From there, the band proved that the music actually never does stop as they continued with “Dark Star” before going right into “Scarlet Begonias” and “China Doll”. Their lengthy second set segue continued back into “Dark Star” before charging forward into “Eyes of the World”. Following the “Drums” and “Space” portion of the show, the band returned to finish the second set with “Black Peter” and “Casey Jones”.

The show’s one-song encore heard the band sending fans into the night with a performance of “Ripple”. Watch the set two opener of “Here Comes Sunshine” below.
